12.

BEAU

“Surprise!” I said as I popped my head around the corner and grinned at my mom.

She let out a loud shout of excitement and jumped up from her chair. I had only taken a few steps into the room before she launched herself at me and hugged me tight. She held me like that for a few minutes, crying into my shirt like she always did when one of us came home from a long trip.

And just like she had every time I came home, even if I had only been gone for a week or two, she said, “Did they starve you while you were gone?”

“I ate like a king, Mom. I was in Alaska. I could’ve had salmon at every meal if I’d wanted.”

She ignored my protests and shook her head. “I’ll make some extra at dinner and get you healthy again.”

She’d said the same thing to Bray every time he’d come home on leave. When she stayed with Bauer as he recovered, he gained twenty pounds. Obviously, her love language was food, and none of us would ever complain about that.

As usual, I’d brought her gifts she could use in the kitchen, and I was anxious to give them to her but knew I had to talk to her about what was going on with Calliope first.

“Have you spoken to anyone from town in the last few days?”

“No. Why?” She frowned and stood up a little straighter, probably steeling herself for bad news before she asked, “What did y’all do?”

“I just got home, Mom. Besides, we’re in our thirties. Your go-to thought shouldn’t be that we’re in trouble.” Mom raised one eyebrow and gave me the look, and I couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ve got news about Calliope.”

“You found her?”

“Technically, she found us,” I said as I led her to the kitchen table where she’d been working on a craft project. It looked like something for the Christmas carnival, and I was careful to avoid touching anything for fear of my clumsy paws destroying something important. I pulled out a chair for her at the other end of the table and waited until she was seated before I turned the chair next to her so that I could face her when I said, “She came to Springblood looking for Lenae yesterday and ran into the boys.”

“And what happened? Why didn’t they call me?”

“At first, she thought Bray was me, then Bauer walked up and she saw the differences.”

“Your eyes.”

“Yeah. When we first met, we were in a dark bar so she’d never seen my original color before, but she knew right away that their eyes were a different color than mine.”

“What did she say?”

“Apparently, she was ready to lay into me, but she restrained herself and just chewed Bray’s ass until she realized she was yelling at the wrong guy.”

“What right does she think she has to yell at you? You’re not the one that disappeared off the face of the planet with no forwarding address or a word of goodbye.
